Shared Boat Ownership - How It Works

Shared Boating's Shared Boat Ownership Program provides a practical and cost effective way to realise the dream of owning a luxury vessel without any of the hassles of maintenance, management and cleaning.

Ownership Model

Ownership of a Shared Boating vessel is title-based, legally known as "tenants in common", in which the purchase of an equity share entitles the member to corresponding proportional use of the boat.

We offer 12 shares in a boat, which allows you to own, 1/12, 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 or more of the equity in the boat.

Each vessel is originally purchased by the First Owner under our First Owners' Programme. The First Owner initially owns all 12 shares in the vessel and Shared Boating sells these shares as an agent for the First Owner.

There is an initial Marketing Period, which runs from the date of delivery of the boat until all 12 shares are sold or for 12 months, whichever comes first.  At the end of the Marketing Period, the syndicate commences and runs for 1 day short of 3 years.

Anyone who buys a share in the boat during the Marketing Period is able to use the boat immediately, which is a great incentive to get in early as it gives the early shareowners extended use of the boat for up to 12 months.  There will also be more access to standby use, which is explained further on.

Use of Boat

Our years of experience in managing boat syndicates has given us a great understanding of how our customers like to use their boats.  One of the most common complaints we hear from customers who have been involved in other boat share schemes is, "We could never get the boat when we wanted it."  This is how our customers have told us they want to access the boat.

  1. They want to be able to lock in some days in advance so they can plan ahead.
  2. They want the flexibility to make ad hoc bookings in the near future.
  3. They'd like a chance to lock in the occasional special days before the bookings calendar for a new season is opened to all owners.

Shared Boating meets all these requirements.

Pre-Booked Days

We limit pre-booked days to 24 per annum, including 9 weekend days or public holidays.  This is spread over 3 booking seasons, October - January, February - May, June - September.  Owners can pre-book 8 days per trimester, of which 3 are weekend days or public holidays. This should be viewed as the guaranteed minimum number of days you can book.

Standby Days (ad hoc bookings)

Simple arithmetic will tell you that 12 owners with 24 days each can pre-book a maximum of 288 days per year. This leaves almost 80 days available for maintenance and standby use. We define a standby day as "Any day in the next 7 days (including today) that the boat has not been allocated to another owner or to maintenance."  There is no limit to the number of standby days that an owner can book and standby days do not affect an owner's pre-booked entitlement. The only limitation is that owners must have booked all their pre-booked days before thay can book standby days.

Red Circle Days

Before each booking season is officially launched all owners are invited to tell us if they have any special days, such as birthdays, anniversaries, overseas visitors or other significant events when they'd really like to use the boat.  When these requests have been received, we enter them on behalf of the owners before the bookings season is opened.  These days are included in the pre-booked entitlement. The only difference is they are entered earlier.  We call these days "Red Circle Days", because of the analogy with drawing a red circle around a special day on a calendar.
